Lo-Fi Prototype

We began our process of creating the Lo-Fi Prototype by performing a comparative evaluation of other leading fitness applications on both the Android and iPhone. This helped us develop a list of  features we wanted to include in our prototype. Both the Android and iPhone marketplaces allow users to write reviews of each application, so careful analysis of these reviews gave us insight into what worked and what failed.

From here, we were able to determine a core set of features to incorporate into the Lo-Fi prototype. This list was compiled from findings from our comparative analysis, personas, and scenarios.

These features are listed below:

  • Allow users to access information about a particular exercise through the use of an anatomy chart, delineated by muscle group. The user can view descriptions, videos, and an image gallery to help inform them about the particular exercise.
  • Provide users with a number of assembled workout programs that guide them, step-by-step, through a series of exercises.
  • Log statistics about the user’s workout and allow her to view a history of her activity through a graph or chart.
  • Provide the user with a profile, in which stats such as muscle size, weight maximums, and past workout performance can be viewed and analyzed. The user may also view and upload images of themselves into their profile to.

To get a sense of how our application would look, we began a brainstorming session where each of us sketched our ideas and then we shared and critiqued each other. This helped us get on the same footing, but also helped shape the look and feel of our design.

After our brainstorming sessions, we merged all of ideas together by combining, discarding, and converging our designs.  Finally, we sought to maintain consistency with our interface even through disparate workflows by using tabs, persistent buttons, and common graphical elements.  Two of our tentative workflows are shown below.

The following workflows showcase two pathways of action when using the application: 1) starting a pre-determined workout from a list of available workouts, and 2) selecting a body part to determine the workout.
